He gives us an appointment very early, on a beautiful but chilly spring morning, on the Trocadéro esplanade. Romain loves to surprise. Indeed, since 2015, he has opened the doors of the biggest auction houses by organizing outdoor “shootings”. And the result is WOW! “For 8 years I produced at least 6 catalogs a year and I found that we were going around in circles, I was a little bored. The click came during a photo session in the United States with a decorator, I saw an image made on the beach. Since he chain the places… and records: we remember George Nakashima's armchair on the Mer de Glace, a house by Candilis on the Corbières beach in Marseille, Yonel Lebovici's ironing board and the Abbey of Montmajour, the Mogens armchair Lassen at Kiddy Parc, open-air playground, Megève and Perriand, etc. etc and it never ceases to amaze us...
This lawyer by training, who became an expert in architectural furniture from the middle of the 20th century out of passion (graduated with a DEA in Finance and legal matters and a degree in art history), began the profession in 2005 by opening the design department of an auction house in the provinces. Then, it joined the capital and the "majors" of the environment with very good sales for fifteen years. Some pieces have reached records such as an extremely rare pyramidal lamp and a beetle table by Georges Jouve, with a nice provenance since received by the owner as wedding gifts, or even an armchair by Jean Royère, sold for an absolute record €156,000 at the 'era.
In 2018 Romain opened his office on rue de Savoie in the 6th arrondissement, since then he has organized several sales a year for different Houses with the same passion and joyful energy. And, when asked what his design preferences are, he answers without hesitation, Sottsass and Prouvé, for the pure line…
We will find Romain Coulet on Tuesday March 29 with a very nice sale for Maison RC.
