This exceptional piece is a votive, Catholic sculpture-object. Most likely Brazilian inspired. It was collected from an altar dedicated to the cult of Mamy Wata, in the region of Ouidah in Benin, the place of departure of slave ships and the return of freed slaves after the Abolition of Slavery in 1848.
